The American Youth Soccer Organization is founded on these concepts:
Everyone Plays: The 1020 policy is that all players on a team play at least 3 quarters per game though the National policy is a minimum of two quarters per game. If a player sits out 1 quarter this week -- and another player plays the whole game -- next week swap -- so that all players get equal time. All players deserve the opportunity to play - remember we are #1 in the Youth development business - winning games is not our #1 goal. Playing with encouragment boosts a player's moral - sitting on the bench does not.
Balanced Teams: Each year, teams are formed with the intention of distributing individual talent among all the teams. This is done with the hope that no single team will dominate the others, allowing the other teams to stand an equal chance of winning games. If a game is lopsided for whatever reason -- the dominating coach has the duty and responsibility to alter his team -players, positions, tactics (must shoot with left foot or use head), etc. - so that they can still play hard and learn without crushing the other kids.
Open Registration: AYSO is open to any child wishing to play youth soccer.
Positive Coaching: Children grow from positive comments and encouragement. They enjoy the sport even more when they are being cheered for. They learn from their mistakes when mistakes are forgiven.
Good Sportsmanship: We encourage sporting behavior from our players, coaches and spectators. Sportsmanship awards are often given to teams at the end of the season.
